The market began as a temporary fish market in Tsukiji, opened due to the destruction during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake of the Nihonbashi riverside fish market which had served for the distribution of food in Tokyo since the Edo Period.

Just after 5:00 AM, intermediate wholesalers start their bidding, and at 8:00 representatives from fish shops and other retail outlets around Tokyo gather in the market, with spirited voices flying back and forth, creating a lively time.

In addition, the Tsukiji outer market is enjoyed by many members of the general public, including sightseers, shoppers, and foreign tourists who come to shop and eat, drawn by the high quality and gourmet dining.

The market handles approx 2,888 tons of fish a day generating over 2.8 billion yen.

Tsukiji Market is scheduled to be closed in 2012 due to the old building and quantity of fish have been increasing, will be moved to seaside area Toyosu.
